About
Simon’s work starts within an inner reality. Images are summoned through layered marks to create psychological states. Each mark carries thought, time and attention; evidence of looking, returning and persisting. The process is not a route to the image but inseparable from it.
The psychological is always primary. Isolation, futility and the quiet dignity of perseverance are not themes they are conditions created within the work. A figure crossing water is not documented narrative but a suspended psychological space: a body moving through indifference, uncertainty and persistence. The works do not describe events, they inhabit states.
By placing contemporary subjects within mythological and psychological frameworks, Simon resists the merely topical. The work becomes part of an enduring human narrative of persistence and survival (echoing traditions from Homer to Beckett) so the specific becomes universal.
In Simon’s practice the act of making is devotional and a form of witness. The insistence of making mark after mark, work after work affirms the enduring value of human attention and gesture. A refusal of indifference in an age of speed, distraction and detachment.
